Hong Kong’s insurance complaints rise 18.6% in 2022

About 359 cases were claim-related whilst 20 were non-claim related.

In 2022, 695 insurance complaints cases were recorded in Hong Kong, this was 18.6% on a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the Insurance Complaints Bureau (ICB) reported.

It also consisted of 607 new cases and 88 cases carried over from the previous year. Among these cases, 216 were dismissed as they did not fall under ICB's jurisdiction. 

Out of the remaining 479 cases, 379 were closed, and 100 cases were deferred to 2023.

The bureau handles both claim and non-claim related cases of monetary nature.

Out of the 479 cases that were closed, 359 cases were claim-related.

These cases involved disputes regarding the application of policy terms, non-disclosure, excluded items, the amount of indemnity, and breaches of policy conditions. 

The two most common types of policies involved in these claim disputes were hospitalisation or medical policies and life or critical illness policies.

Whilst, only 20 non-claim-related cases were closed. 

These cases encompassed various issues such as contractual matters, operational issues, company policies, misrepresentation, and policy returns. Among these non-claim disputes, the largest category of policies involved was life or critical illness policies.
