Sale of COVID-19 policies surged in Taiwan

About 460,000 over the past week.

Taiwan recorded 460,000 COVID-19 policies sold in the past weeks amidst rising infection, the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) data showed.

The data showed local insurers have sold 1.65 million COVID-19 insurance policies since they were launched early last year, spiking 38% in 18 April.

The surge in sales could be attributed to a surge in local infections, which totaled 551 on 19 April.

Despite some insurers halting sales of policies compensating quarantined policyholders, related products covering hospitalisation and adverse events due to vaccination were still available.

COVID-19 insurance sales totaled $10.3m in the month.
