Tokio Marine sends relief fund to fire-stricken Maui

The fire struck the island of Hawaii on 8 August.

Yesterday, Japanese insurer Tokio Marine announced its donation of $50,000 to the island of Maui, Hawaii.

“We would like to express our deepest sympathy to all the people who have been affected by the massive wildfire in the island of Maui, Hawaii on 8 August 2023,” the insurer said in a statement.

Through the Japanese Red Cross Society, the donated funds will aid the humanitarian effort and the recovery of the affected areas.

“Donations will also be provided by overseas group companies in the United States and Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd.” the statement added.

According to Reuters, the fires, started on the evening of 8 August, caused extensive devastation in Lahaina.

This city, with a population of roughly 13,000, is located in northwestern Maui and has historical significance as a former whaling hub and the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Presently, it attracts around 2 million annual tourists.

To date, 388 individuals are still not found whilst persons who have passed due to the tragedy have hit over a hundred.
