Worst Seoul flooding triggers more than $50m in motor claims

4,791 car owners have filed for insurance claims due to damages by the flood.

More than $50m or an estimated KR₩65.8b was the total payout for claims for damages due to flooded or damage cars in South Korea after one of the heaviest storms in 80 years hit the country.

A report from Bloomberg said that at least 163 people lost their homes and 751 buildings were flooded due to the storm.

The General Insurance Association of Korea revealed that 4,791 car owners have already claimed for damages.

Local reports said that the rainfall on Monday was the highest in 115 year since weather observations began in Seoul in 1907, breaking both daily and hourly precipitation records. Peak one-hour rainfall recorded in Dongjak-gu, southern Seoul was 141.5 millimeters, easily surpassing the district’s previous record of 118.6 millimeters in 1942. Daily rainfall record was 381.5 millimeters, higher than the previous record of 332.8 millimeters.
